This infrastructure, dating back to the 19th century, carries water from the River Segre to the crop fields of various towns in the counties of Urgell, Pla d’Urgell, La Noguera, Segrià, and Les Garrigues.
With only three weeks to execute this project, it was essential to carefully consider the specific characteristics of the nine existing wall penstocks: their age, interior location, and inaccessible concrete frames. Once the existing penstock elements were dismantled, the spindles were transferred to the workshop to be adapted to the new gates. The civil works were modified to install the new gates, and once installed, the equipment was tested and commissioned in time for the canal’s renewed activity.
In total there are two canals. The first, which connects the town of Ponts with Montoliu de Lleida, is 144.2 km long and has four main irrigation canals. The second is an auxiliary canal, 76.6 km long, which begins at the Sant Llorenç de Montgai reservoir and joins the main canal in the municipality of Artesa de Lleida. The complete hydraulic system can irrigate 49,490 farms across 70,242 hectares.
